Hey, playas, what’s your pick of pics?
This is what I currently find most comfortable for me. I like that I can play with any corner and it’s exactly the same and I like the heavier 1 mm gauge. When I first started playing (more than 20 years ago - sheesh), I used the flimsiest Dunlop Tortex I could get my hands on. I put the guitar down for a few years in my early 20s and when I came back to it I couldn’t find a pic I was comfortable with until I bought a bass and bought some of these triangular Claytons to try ‘em out.
When I first started playing, it was whatever the thickest pick was in the store. Generally it was ~1.0mm Dunlop Tortex or Heavy Dunlop Gels. I liked the texture of the Tortex and they had the thickness I liked.
After a few years of playing and shredding through most of my picks, I took some lessons, altered my playing style, and now I generally get by with a much lighter pick (~.5mm), usually a Dunlop gel.
I started with the thin dunlop for strumming then moved to the thicker 1 mm. I gave up playing with a pick 8 years ago in favor of classical technique so that I could become a music major in college. That classical technique quickly switched to latin tangos and milongas interspersed with Tommy Emmanuel fingerstyle. After 8 years of using my fingernails to play I have forgotten what it’s like to have short nails on my right hand. When I need to use a picking technique though I simply use the nail of my right hand. This is actually much better for me because I was constantly dropping picks.
